Girl Scout Cookies deserve a good wine or soft drink pairing

I love supporting the Girl Scouts—having hosted several of their troops for special programming in the community I manage. With opportunities for leadership-building and empowerment, as well as a recent acclamation in support of LGBTQ persons, I have to buy cookies each year.

And guess what?!

Girl Scout Cookie season is here!

While wine pairings can elevate the experience with this biccy fest, not everyone drinks alcohol. So I have pairings for that, too.

Whether you’re indulging in cookies with a glass of wine or looking for the perfect non-alcoholic alternative, this guide has you covered.

Unless you eat EVERYTHING with Diet Dr Pepper, like I do, read on, friends!

Adventurefuls®

Description: Brownie-inspired cookies with caramel-flavored creme and a hint of sea salt.

Wine Pairing: Port or Port-style wines. The rich, sweet profile of Port complements the caramel and chocolate notes (Wine Country, 2024).

Soft Drink Alternative: Dr Pepper. The caramel and cherry undertones of Dr Pepper enhance the cookie’s deep chocolate and caramel flavors.

A true Dr Pepper fan knows there’s no period after “Dr” in the name.

Caramel Chocolate Chip

Description: Chewy cookies with caramel, semisweet chocolate chips, and a hint of sea salt.

Wine Pairing: Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. The bold flavors balance the caramel and chocolate nuances (Carpe Travel, 2024).

Soft Drink Alternative: Cream Soda. Hopefully, you have classic A&W. Its smooth, vanilla-like sweetness pairs well with the caramel richness.

Caramel deLites® or Samoas®

Description: Crisp cookies with caramel, toasted coconut, and dark chocolaty stripes.

Wine Pairing: Malbec. The dark fruit flavors and slight spice complement the cookie’s caramel and coconut (Wine Country, 2024).

Soft Drink Alternative: Coca-Cola Classic. The deep caramel flavors in Coke mirror the cookie’s caramel and coconut layers.

Do-si-dos® Peanut Butter Sandwich

Description: Crunchy oatmeal sandwich cookies filled with creamy peanut butter.

Wine Pairing: Zinfandel or Malbec. The fruity and spicy notes pair well with peanut butter (Carpe Travel, 2024).

Soft Drink Alternative: Root Beer. Hopefully, you’re choosing A&W. It’s spiced, creamy notes contrast and enhance the peanut butter’s nuttiness.

Girl Scout S’mores®

Description: Graham sandwich cookies with chocolaty and marshmallowy flavored filling.

Wine Pairing: Zinfandel. The ripe fruit flavors enhance the sweet, toasty flavors of s’mores (Frank Family Vineyards, 2024).

Soft Drink Alternative: Chocolate milk. A nostalgic, creamy pairing that enhances the chocolate and marshmallow flavors.

Lemonades®

Description: Shortbread cookies topped with tangy lemon-flavored icing.

Wine Pairing: Albariño. This crisp, citrusy wine mirrors the lemon notes (Wine Country, 2024).

Soft Drink Alternative: 7-up, Sprite, or Lemonade. The bright citrus flavors amplify the cookie’s tangy icing.

Lemon-Ups®

Description: Crispy lemon cookies baked with inspiring messages.

Wine Pairing: Chardonnay. A balanced Chardonnay complements the lively lemon flavors (Frank Family Vineyards, 2024).

Soft Drink Alternative: Lemon Iced Tea or Lipton Citrus Green Tea! The smooth, slightly sweet tea enhances the lemony brightness.

Peanut Butter Patties® or Tagalongs®

Description: Crispy cookies layered with peanut butter and covered in chocolaty coating.

Wine Pairing: Tawny Port. The nutty, caramelized flavors complement the peanut butter (Wine Enthusiast, 2024).

Soft Drink Alternative: Chocolate malted milkshake. Hopefully, you have a nice independent ice cream parlor near you like Lickety Split in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood. The thick, chocolatey malt balances the peanut butter.

Thin Mints®

Description: Crisp, chocolate cookies dipped in a mint chocolaty coating.

Wine Pairing: Zinfandel. A full-bodied Zinfandel contrasts the bold mint and chocolate flavors (Wine Enthusiast, 2024).

Soft Drink Alternative: Mint Hot Chocolate. The creamy texture and warm minty flavor complement the cookie’s profile.

Toast-Yay!®

Description: Toast-shaped cookies with French toast flavor and icing.

Wine Pairing: Sparkling wine like a Riesling or Moscato. The effervescence and acidity balance the sweet flavors (Wine Enthusiast, 2024).

Soft Drink Alternative: Vanilla Coke! The smooth vanilla tones complement the French toast flavor.

Toffee-tastic®

Description: Rich, buttery cookies with crunchy toffee bits.

Wine Pairing: Merlot. The dark fruit flavors and smooth finish enhance the buttery toffee (Frank Family Vineyards, 2024).

Soft Drink Alternative: Butterscotch soda. I can find it here in Chicago—but I understand it’s hard to find elsewhere. The caramel and buttery notes complement the cookie’s texture.

Trefoils®

Description: Classic shortbread cookies inspired by the original Girl Scout Cookie recipe.

Wine Pairing: Sparkling Wine or Chardonnay. The high acidity of sparkling wine cuts through the richness, while Chardonnay enhances the buttery notes (Carpe Travel, 2024).

Soft Drink Alternative: Ginger Ale. I hope you have Canada Dry. The crisp, slightly spicy bubbles cleanse the palate between bites of rich shortbread.

The 2025 Girl Scout Cookie season marks the final opportunity to enjoy Toast-Yay!® and Girl Scout S’mores®, as they will be retired after this year (Girl Scouts Blog, 2025).
